Token Tuesdays with Colin: Trainwreck

TRAINWRECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I. Fa-king. Love. This. Strain!!!! Seriously tho, one of the best scented and best tasting types of marijuana in my opinion. If you are looking for a cerebral “head high”, as the kids are calling it these days, this is a perfect strain to pick up. Trainwreck has been a household name for us marijuana abusers for decades now. I’m sure if you said the name “trainwreck” around your hippy parents, they would know exactly what you’re talking about. Besides giving a crazy awesome head buzz, this strain is great for patients that suffer from depression, anxiety, appetite stimulant, cramps associated with PMS, RLS, DDD, nausea, muscle aches, and eases pain from nerve damage. I personally have found myself leaning towards this strain whenever I’m in need of a pick me up. It helps take a bad mood and turn it right around. It’s also great to smoke during the day because it gives you a euphoric state of mind with a high amount of energy.

Smoke em if you got em boys and girls! Have a gnarly week!

Thirsty Thursdays with Dave: Evil Twin's Two Jesus stouts

I have to tell you about Evil Twin's two Jesus stouts. First, Even More Jesus. The giant flavors of this stout keep up with any of the near mythical, once a year stouts from Founders or Goose Island. Deep colors, huge chocolate and coffee notes. Big abv, big mouth feel. It's a beer to savor. Brewed in limited quantities but this beer seems to be everywhere right now. Get your hands on this work of art. Had it? Loved it? Go big then, tough guy. Double Barrel Jesus awaits your confessions, with what seems like double the intense flavors of even more jesus. Both at 12% abv. Evil Twin makes all their beers at other breweries, every beer is a collaboration. This one is done with Westbrook Brewing, who make an incredible line of beers. Hunt these stouts down and grill something. Preferably something bloody. Praise Jebus!

Saison Dupont Vieille Provision

Ever drink a baseball glove mixed with barn hay but kind of sparkling and lightly fruity? Well you should. Saisons are beers that some find just too offensive to the palate, but the right one can resemble a fine white wine or champagne. The style is open-fermented which allows wild yeast and bacteria to become part of the process, which is what leads to the funky, dry flavors of a saison. Even to myself some saisons are hit or miss, but if you had to ask me to pick you one that would best define the style, Saison Dupont is the way to go. Hazy and golden with a nice white head, crisp, dry and sparkling. A light spice is noticeable. Good spring/summer beer. Pair with chicken, fish or a whole mess of hot, nude women. Cheers! -Dave

Thirsty Thursdays With Dave: Founders Rubaeus Ale

This one is for the ladies and dudes with vaginas. Only kidding, but really, this beer is fucking delish. Brewed with a shit-ton of fresh Michigan raspberries, it's not only refreshing but it keeps you wanting more and more. Not overly sweet, there's a huge malt bill to balance out the sour/tart from the berries. To hell with your summer shandy, with a 5.7% abv this is going to be my frequent lawn mowing beer this summer. You want to get real crazy? Pour yourself a glass of your favorite IPA and top it off with a bit of Rubaeus, thank me later. A seasonal release but you should be able to find this wherever finer beers are sold and poured. Cheers and mahalo! -Dave

Thirsty Thursdays with Dave: St Bernardus Abt 12

One of these will give you a buzz. Three of them might have you talking funny. Brewed by Trappist monks in the quadrupel style, abt12 is an incredible beer. Dark in color, heavy with flavors of dried fruits, sweeter, boozy... honestly, everyone who likes beer should try this beer. World-class ratings touts this beer as one of the best to be had, and with good reason. With a recipe centuries old, this beer was once brewed at an abbey where you could only get the beer if you visited the monastery in Belgium. Now, it's shared with the planet. With a 10% abv this is no session beer, but a sipper to be paired with finer foods. To be enjoyed as a treat for the pallet, not for the average bro belly.
If you try any of the beers I've blogged about, let this be the first. Try it cold, then try it room temperature, a whole new beast awakens. And for shits sake, buy some beer glasses and pour this mother in a
tulip. Cheers and mahalo!

Thirsty Thursdays with Dave: Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Ale

People often ask me, Dave, what the fuck is a sour beer? Well, if you stop swearing in front of my grandmother, I'll tell you. Sour beers are an old style of brewing fermented with bacterias. Typically brewed in the Flanders region of Belgium and often barrel aged, sour beers have more of a fruity, acidic bite to them. Almost vinegary. Some are even put through a second fermentation process with cherries or cherry juice to give even more tartness. Traditionally though, fruit isn't used.
A very wine-like beer, Monk's Cafe flemish sour is my go to entry level for those in search of trying new beers. The most mild of tart and fruit, lightly carbonated and always refreshing. Found wherever a good import selection is had. Pair with more beer. Cheers and mahalo!

ps check out this euro dad saying some historic shit about Monks Flemish Ale.

Detroit Soup

Ok so one of the things that makes Detroit so great is the movers and shakers in our community! The solid dudes and ladies who are breaking new ground with solid innovations and hard work. Vile friend Amy Kaherl (recently represented in the Girls Guide to Detroit Video) has started something rather unique: Detroit soup .

So heres the scoop: Five dollar cover gets you in. You sit and enjoy a meal with other mover and shakers in the community. Presentations are given on certain plans that will be voted on that night. Then everyone gets a chance to vote. The money collected at the door goes towards the specific plan that won the vote. Seems simple enough. Like one of those " why didn't i think of this!?" kind of ideas!

Our hats off to Amy and the others who created and are still running Detroit Soup.

Make sure you guys check out this video below that explains things a lot better than a two paragraph blog. -Vile

Music Mondays: Detroit The Album

So last week I had the pleasure, to lay down a few guitar tracks on the recent project from Vile friend Derek John . DETROIT THE ALBUM  is the first of its kind. Here's the scoop: 40 Musicians 10 Groups and 10 original songs all in one album. Each group is comprised of elite members of the Detroit music community thus making up 10 different super groups if you will. As much as these songs are not my personal cup of tea to record, it was still fun stepping out of my comfort zone along with 39 other musicians stepping out of their boxes as well. The end result is an exceptionally mixed variety of music with different feels and genres. So take a second and head over to their BandCamp. The album was just released this past weekend! So let us know what you think! Comment Like or share below and help spread the word!

POSI DETROIT: DANI FAHS ON : OMNICORP DETROIT

Lasers. How fucking cool are lasers? Or what about wooden, floatable glasses? Or handmade industrial furniture? These are just a few of the really rad things being produced in an Eastern Market located industrial shop named OMNICOPRDETROIT

OCD is what is called a ‘hackerspace’, housing 10+ local “makers / entrepreneurs / doers / thinkers / creators / artists / designers / engineers / musicians and others who come together in a repurposed industrial building in Eastern Market to work on projects, learn and share together”. Every 1st and 3rd thursday of the month come check out what they’re creating and you can even bring your own project to “hack”.

During September of last year, I was fortunate enough to get a tour of their space and meet some of the members during Eastern Market After Dark. Since we’re creators ourselves, we love seeing spots like OCD in the community supporting the same values and creativity.

If you’ve got ideas for some really awesome shit, set a date and get to their space for an Open Hack Night. Lets see what you're made of, Detroit! -Dani Fahs

Thirsty Thursdays with Dave: Lagunitas IPA

Most people hear IPA (India, not Indiana pale ale) and think of the most overwhelming bitterness and it turns them off. Maybe they just haven't had the right one. Here in the Mitten, we've had Bell's two-hearted shoved down our throats. I do mean that in the best way possible (it was, after all, rated one of the best IPA's in the world. Twice.) but some may not know that IPA's aren't always tongue crushing. For instance, Lagunitas IPA. The west coast has a very distinct style of IPA's which are more citrus-based than anything, as the mid-west and east coast offers more earthy or floral styles. Lagunitas is everywhere finer beers are sold. Pair with cheeses, fish or chicken taco's or, the sun, the beach and a fat joint. Cheers and mahalo!

Music Mondays: Interview with Mike Reaume of Man Mountain

A few weeks ago we were able to sit down with Mike Reaume of Man Mountain and ask him a few questions. For those who don't know. Man Mountain is an up and coming Post Rock band, who is quickly gaining respect and notoriety in the Detroit Scene.

Vile: Alright Mike, Who? What? and Where? so Who and What is Man Mountain?

Mike: Man Mountain is a project that started about a year and a 1/2 ago. We play instrumental post rock ambiaent music that we have been playing mostly in the Detroit area. A lil bit more late 90's early 2000's indie instrumental type music.

Vile: Oh really? what would you say are your major influences?

Mike: Oh, Well id have to say American Football Caspian, Appleseed Cast, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Sigur Ros etc

Vile: How do you feel about Sigur Ros being mentioned recently in the Metro Times as being on of the top overrated bands ever?

Mike: Oh yeah i saw that! Thats got to be a joke. I feel like they post those things in order to get a ton of click throughs for their ad revenues. Everyone is like "WHAT? THEY CANT SAY THAT ABOUT SIGUR ROS" and they are forced to read through the rest of the garbage article. it was pretty dumb.

VILE: Agreed! So whats your favorite part of playing in the Detroit scene?

Mike: Its actually been kind of cool. The last band we played in, we mostly played in the toledo area. The scene is pretty dead down there so its been good playing for a whole new crowd. I feel like everyone is real cool at shows. Like people actually come out to listen to our music, not get annoyed with us for playing background music while they play pool. Detroit kids seem to get it.

Vile: Ok so what should we be looking forward to in 2014 for Man Mountain?

Mike:  After our show at the old Miami in March we are heading into the studio to record our full length. And hopefully have everything finished for the fall of 2014.

Vile: who are you recording with?

Mike: we will be recording with Matt Halliday of Minx studios. He's recorded for bands like Empire Empire and Wayne Szalinski  !

Vile: alright dude, thanks for stopping by and we'll all be waiting with anticipationto hear the full length!

Make sure you guys check out this track "Lucerna" from our dudes in Man Mountain. -Vile
